Open source
Gatebridge is open-core. The server program, the Android app, and the message protocol are open source. The hosted service and admin tools are the paid product.
The split
Open source (free forever)
- Linux server program source
- Android app source
- Message protocol (PROTOCOL.md)
- Relay configuration examples
- Build and deployment scripts
Paid product (managed convenience)
- Pre-built Play Store app with auto-updates
- Hosted encrypted relay
- Admin console and device registry
- Team management and audit log
- Support (email and Slack)
Why this model
You can run Gatebridge entirely for free: clone the repo, build the server program, sideload the app, and run your own relay. That route has real friction: run the relay software, manage certificates, handle app updates, manage pairing. The paid product removes that friction. This is the same trade as Ghost or Mattermost: open source is not the same as a free hosted service.
License
The open-source parts use a permissive license. See the repository for the current choice. The hosted service we run for customers is proprietary.
Contributing
Contributions are welcome. The codebase uses strict test-driven development. See the repository's CONTRIBUTING.md and the architecture plans for context.
